Creating Textures
with Robin Cooper

Course starts 10 April 2006.

Registration: Closed

In this eight week workshop Robin Cooper will draw on her skills as an analog and digital painter to demonstrate techniques required to create exceptional 2D texture paintings for use in 3D environments.

Working entirely within 2D painting platforms Robin will draw on over ten years of experience at Pixar Animation Studios to help students develop an eye for detail and understand what potential employers look for in a portfolio.

What makes a painted texture look real? What makes it look luminous? How can you effectively simplify and characterize it for animation backgrounds?

Using tips from traditional Scenic/ Trompe L'Oiel painting as well as digital painting techniques students will begin to build an exceptional, portfolio of quality texture paintings.

Students will be challenged to create stylized texture designs and will receive critique from a professional texture painter/designer/art director experienced in the world of cutting edge 3D animation through a list of credits with Pixar.

Students will learn to take their paintings to a new level using dirt, grime and distressing techniques. This class will also explore texture matching and dimensional architectural painting. The result should be the creation of several solid digital art pieces ready for a portfolio.
